Lylia's Last Tea Party

by Stacey

peoniesbowl071The local art community has lost a significant member and supporter.  Lylia Giraldo, mad hatter, doll maker, and magical sprite, died on March 1st after a tragic accident in her native country of Colombia on January 18, 2009.  Lylia was a tiny woman with a huge heart and boundless energy to match.  Her fall and spring art sales were always stocked with imagnitive artworks from people of all walks of life, hand selected by her and approved by her mannequin Francesca.   I was priviledged to participate in several sales during the past 3 years.  The last Lylia’s Tea Party will be held on Friday, May 1 and Saturday, May 2 from 10 AM – 4 PM at Lylia’s home, 3037 Anthony Drive in Decatur, GA.

I am soooooooooo sad! I have been looking for Lylia this year at all her regular art show haunts, asking other venders; no one had seen her this year. I was wanting to purchase one of her marvelous shawls. I only knew her first name. And not even how it was correctly spelled. Then, yesterday, I opened the beautiful lavender purse with fringe I had purchased from her several years ago. There was her name in full on a tag sewn inside. I GOOGLED her name, watched the lovely You-Tube memorial her daughter had done for her (Lylia would be so pleased with that) and am now grieving and missing her so. Lylia was so full of life and fun, it’s hard to imagine her not popping her head (with hat atop) around the corner and saying “Hi!” in her lovely accent. It’s just not the same now without Lylia. What a beautiful person …

Ginger-Lou, thanks for your dear post. Lylia was a lovely person, and will be missed by many of us in the art community.
